Fishing Techniques
Fly-fishing rods should range between a 5 to 8 weight with a matching disc drag reel. 7 foot graphite spinning rods can also be used, while paired with a 8 to 12 pound test.
All lures will have a single barbless hooks as Bull Trout are part of the catch and release. The best lure actions are those which resemble baitfish, as larger Bull Trout will strike at anything that resembles an easy meal. Minnows and larger streamer type flies are ideal and provide an exciting fight from the time you hook into them.
Bull Trout are usually found in moving pools of water around rocks. They are opportunistic feeders, but will conserve as much energy as possible by waiting for a meal to come by. They are a hard fighting fish and will fight from the time you hook them until you have landed it.
Fishers should be equipped with the proper tackles. There are several fishing tackle assortments. Every angler must be supplied by at least a hook, bait, and fishing line.
Sculpin are a constant source of food for Bull Trout. Select patterns that ride with the hook point upwards and have a heavily weighted head. Any combination of brown, olive, and black should work nicely.
Classic Deer Hair Mouse
This may be one of your only opportunities to catch the infamous “mouse hatch”. Bull Trout are known to strike mouse patterns that are skated along back eddies and deep holes. Don’t be left unprepared.

Identification
Fish profile
A Bull Trout and a Dolly Varden have such similar external characteristics that one cannot positively identify the two apart without taking size and habitat into account. As a rule a guide will identify and confirm a bull trout. A large, wide head and pronounced upper jaw, similar to that of a bull will be viewed. Along with a long, slim body that is of olive-green to blue-grey, pale spots will be found along the back and sides. Spawning males will obtain red, orange, or yellow bellies from their normal pale colour.
